New Project: Rip Off Scarf

So, I did it again.

I was searching for a pattern for a friend’s Christmas present and couldn’t find one she’d like. After hours of searching, I finally gave up and decided to do some online shopping. I came across this comfy looking cowl on ModCloth.com:

I was kind of shocked at the price tag ($49.99!!!) on it because the yarn is 30% wool/70% acrylic. I know how cheap that crap is. In fact, I have boxes of that crap in my closet that I bought for $2.99 a ball.

So I ripped out an old, ill-fitting sweater I made when I first started knitting and quickly knitted up the cowl. I fastened the ends with buttons hoping it’d have the same affect as the cute ModCloth scarf… and it does for the most part!

It’s not as quite as bendable(?) or scrunchy as the ModCloth scarf, but it’s super warm and looks a lot nicer than their picture. Plus, it just cost me $2.99, and just four hours of my time.

I think I have a new favorite scarf…

I think it’s cuter than the brown one. I like your buttons better!

Thanks, lilmommacass! I’ve had the buttons for a long time (supposed to be used for a Twinkle sweater) but the sweater turned out really ugly.

hey that twinkle sweater you are talking about–is it the one in vogue knitting holiday 2009? I made that sweater today and ripped it all out because it didn’t look right.

I haven’t seen the newest Twinkle Sweater. I’ve attempted the Best Friend Cardigan with a dozen different types of yarn – none of which have worked. I love, love, love her designs, but they just don’t work with someone who has a bust.

Have you had any luck with the Twinkle Sweaters? The only one I like is the shopping tunic and it’s the warmest thing on Earth (actually made from the Lion Brand brown yarn to make this cowl!).

I had to modify the pattern quite a bit and you are right–they are not good patterns for people with busts.
